Biographical/Historical Data:
Dr. Carl Henkelmann (1900-1966) made his first trip to Alaska in 1948 with the U.S. Navy at the invitation of Dr. Levine from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Barrow was his first place of interest before Anaktuvuk Pass. Henkelmann was interested in monitoring changes in the dental condition of the people of Anaktuvuk Pass after outside foods (sugars, etc.) became part of their diet. He made several presentations at the National Dental Convention in Chicago showing his slides and the dental casts he had made at Anaktuvuk Pass.
