Abstract:
ORAL HISTORY 97-65-48 SIDE A. Mary Mekiana talks about accepting a teaching position in Anaktuvuk Pass, meeting David Mekiana and marrying him in 1973, the schools changing from state run to borough run operations, teaching part time from 1974-1978, her two children, Debora and Gladys, taking the postmaster position at the village post office, Lela Ahgook, Margaret Gordman, the education system in the village, her daughter's position experience with RAHI, interaction of teachers and parents, advantages for her children living in the village, and her children learning subsistence activities from their father.

ORAL HISTORY 97-65-48 SIDE B. Mary Mekiana talks about feeling part of the village, her wedding in the village, participating in some of the village activities, support from people in the village when her husband was ill, her plans to stay in the village, Deborah visiting Washington, D.C. with other youth from Alaska, her children being members of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation and the village corporation, managing the store, hardship on the villagers when the caribou do not migrate through, seeing her first migration of caribou, changes in Anaktuvuk Pass since she arrived, first telephones and electricity, the newer houses in Anaktuvuk Pass, the first argos, her duties as the postmaster in the village, and the possibility for changing mail service.
