Abstract:
"Most of the translated songs in Atuugaurat have been sung by the bilingual instructors of the Inupiat areas since the first Inupiat literacy training workshop in the summer of 1973 in Nome, Alaska. Others were added to the original collection with each succeeding workshop involving the Upper Kobuk instructors. These people have a great love for music. Even though they were discouraged from dancing and singing the traditional Eskimo songs, they took to singing many religious songs instead of their own. The translation of the songs in this collection were done exclusively by the ladies from the Upper Kobuk. It was mainly through their enjoyment of the songs and their desire to have them written for use by their students in the bilingual education classes that this collection was made. They worked many hours in the preparation of the song syllables. The original melodies of the songs have been modified in many instances. This was done to accommodate the extra Eskimo syllables on one hand, and to reflect the changes in the tunes themselves as sung by the people on the other"--P. i.
