Abstract:
The Howard Luke Papers consist of photographs and photocopied images. Subjects include a parade and dog sled races celebrating the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous and Ice Carnival; the Fairbanks Winter Carnival and North American Championship Dog Sled Race; an Alaska Native potlatch; Alaska Native dancers and drummers; a 1985 trip to New Zealand; a 1989 trip to Russia; the construction of an Elder Hall; Howard Luke's family members; students at Howard Luke School; participants at Luke's Gaalee'ya Spirit Camp; and many other gatherings. Also included are images of Howard Luke and other individuals building dog sleds, fish wheels, and other hand-made wooden items, as well as images of Chena, Alaska and of Chena Athabascan Indians. Other items include a graveyard map of Nenana; clippings; obituaries and greeting cards.

Howard Luke is an Athabascan elder noted especially for his work in educating youth about Athabascan culture and values, and, in particular for teaching children how to live off the land and how to construct items they need in order to do so. Mr. Luke's Gaalee'ya Spirit Camp gives students of all ages the opportunity to explore language, math, science, athletics, computing, art and the outdoors from a Native perspective and set within a structure of Native values. Mr. Luke is a noted Athabascan craftsman and expert on the construction of canoes, dog sleds and other traditional Athabascan hand-crafted items.
