Abstract:
The Floyd and Jeanne Ohlsen Family Papers consist of a typed memoir of the trip that brothers Floyd and Rodney Ohlsen made to Fairbanks, Alaska, via the Alaska Highway in June of 1946; a small album containing photographs from the 1946 trip; and 1,095 35mm color slides taken in the years 1947-1958. Images include family and friends and their activities; Dawson, Yukon, and Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta; the Mount McKinley area, Fairbanks, Circle Hot Springs, Galena, Kotzebue, Livengood, McGrath, and Nome, Alaska; scenery and settlements along the Alaska Highway and Richardson Highway; small airfields throughout Alaska and airfield maintenance; the Fairbanks ice carnival; sled dog racing, ice hockey, automobile racing, skiing, and hunting; Alaskan wildflowers; and hydraulic mining. The most unusual items in the collection are several images of dogs parachuting.

Biographical/Historical Data:
Floyd A. Ohlsen (1922-1991), son of Alfred and Loretta Ohlsen, was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. He received an engineering degree from the University of Washington, and during World War II served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines. After the war he returned to Fairbanks, where he worked as a consultant and engineer for various architectural and engineering firms. He piloted his own airplane and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. In 1950 Floyd married Jeanne K. Alberts, with whom he had three daughters, Roxann, Lori, and Heidi.
