Abstract:
The Ralph F. Taylor Photograph Collection consists of 2,425 slides taken by Ralph F. Taylor in the years 1960 through 1965. Many of the images are of Fairbanks, Alaska, and activities and events in the Fairbanks area, including construction projects, sporting events, festivals, and recreational activities. One group of images depicts damage in the Valdez, Alaska, area caused by the earthquake of 1964. There are also images of a number of other Alaskan communities.
Biographical/Historical Data:
Ralph F. Taylor (1902-1968) was a graduate of Harvard University School of Architecture and Columbia University Graduate School. Raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, he resided after marriage in West Orange, New Jersey. In 1960 Taylor was asked to come to Fairbanks, Alaska, to join the Philleo Engineering firm for a limited period of time to "lend a credible New York City area" architectural influence to the firm as they sought (and secured) the contract to design the new Fairbanks Municipal Center and other government buildings, including the Distant Early Warning radar and telescopic facilities. Taylor commuted between Fairbanks and West Orange for seven years and was in Fairbanks during the 1964 Good Friday earthquake. Since he was one of the few architects in Alaska at that time, his services were enlisted to survey the damage.
