Abstract:
Lillian Webb is interviewed by Gayle Maloy on March 8, 1985 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Webb's parents were married in Dawson City, Yukon in 1898, and also owned a hotel in Fairbanks for a while. Webb talks about becoming a beautician in Seattle during the Depression, starting her own business there, and later moving to Fairbanks, where she opened Lillian's Beauty Salon. Webb talks about hairstyles and the sorts of customers she's worked with, including "sporting girls" and Russian women during the Lend-Lease Project. She describes social activities in Fairbanks, including basketball and baseball games, different clubs and bars, and ice carnivals. She also tells about fishing on the Chena River and touring Cleary Hill Mine, and how everyone in Fairbanks celebrated when the announcement came that World War II was over (Webb got to wear a WAC uniform that night).
