Abstract:
The goal of this study is to collect baseline data on waterbirds migrating through and breeding in the Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project area to enable assessment of the potential effects of the Project and to inform the development of appropriate protection, mitigation, and enhancement measures. As used here, "waterbirds" is applied broadly to include swans, geese, ducks, loons, grebes, cranes, cormorants, herons, gulls, and terns, but excludes shorebirds (they are included in Study 10.16). The study area encompasses a 3-mile buffer zone around the Project area (access routes, transmission lines, inundation zone, and facilities) with several extensions to include certain water bodies, and includes the proposed Denali corridor (within the Nenana River watershed).
